April 12 - Naperville, IL - His announcement of
this truth came only a few days ago, and was mostly shrugged off as a
joke. But as the application deadline draws closer, his true commitment
begins to reveal.
Jabali S., a student at NNHS and an icon for bane across the halls, two
days ago claimed that he will be running for student government in his
junior year.
"What the hell is he thinking?" exclaimed a student in the
hallway, who asked for anonymity. It seems clear that nobody believes him to have a chance during
elections, which are scheduled to be held May 10th. Here are a few excerpts from his speech (unverified):
- "When there is a problem, like when people are fighting, they
come to me for help..."
- "I think that I am qualified for this position because I think a
lot of people know me..."
His speech scheduled for for the week of May 5th. Among his competitors
are Peter Fu, Eric Choi (though he has expressed unwillingness to run this
year), and several others.
Here is the majority of an interview conducted Friday, 6:18 PM.
----------
Angelex: What motivated you to run for student government?
Jabali S: My love for participating in such activities, and
helping out in organizations such as Key Club... ...One particular
experience that I found gratifying was making baskets for the homeless.
AGX: And... how will those skills help in your role as a board
member.
JS: I believe that... well, I don't know, I think that my
experience in [teamwork], and also my getting along with other members on
the board will help me out, when I get on the board... if I do.
AGX: What sort of changes can we expect from the board and the
school if you do get elected on the board?
JS: I will actually enforce, and push for, you know, that sophomores,
in my case Juniors expressing their views. For instance, off-campus
rights. Right now, we need ID's to enter and leave the building and I
believe [that this is unnecessary]. I believe that students can should
have the power to determine their own future, [and that leaving their ID's
behind are not necessary.]
AGX: I see. Do you believe yourself to have a legitimate chance
at winning the vote?
JS: (pauses... laughs) Yes, I do.
AGX: Can you elaborate on that sir?
JS: Um... well, many strangers have come up to me and have
expressed that they know me... I believe that this [can be] either a good
or bad sign, but I [understand] that many people have bad opinions of me,
and by going on the board I hope that I can somewhat change their views.
AGX: I see, but what I'm trying to ask is... are you confident
that you will be elected.
JS: Am I confident that I will be elected...? (pause, more
laughs) Well... I give it an 85% chance on that.
AGX: Eighty-five percent? Isn't that a little high considering
the competition you will be getting from other candidates? I'm sure you
understand that there are many other candidates that are just as qualified
for the post.
JS: I believe that I am just another fish in the sea, and that I
have just as good of a chance as anyone else in this.
AGX: Very well. Would you like to say anything to our audience?
JS: I'd like to state for the record that, please vote for me--I
will work very diligently to express opinions and views to the student
board, and whoever is high in command, I really don't know the specifics
yet, I think we need to be elected before we know that.
AGX: Thank you, anything else?
JS: Um... vote for Jabali.
AGX: Okay! Thank you for your time! Good luck sir...

It seems that the candidate is fairly sure that he will be elected, and
we can only wish him "good luck".
